Preventive Heart Screening in Tustin: What's Included in a 60-Minute Visit

Most people only think about their heart after something feels wrong. A preventive screening flips that around: it gives you a look at your heart rhythm and major arteries while you still feel fine. At ProActive Health Screening in Tustin, the whole visit takes about an hour, uses no needles, and doesn't require a referral.

Here is exactly what happens, step by step.

Who comes in for a preventive screening?

Our patients are usually adults 35 and older from Tustin, Irvine, Santa Ana, Orange and the rest of Orange County. Common reasons include:

  • A family history of heart disease, stroke or aneurysm
  • Wanting a clearer picture than a routine physical provides
  • Turning 40, 50 or 60 and deciding to take a proactive step
  • Adult children booking a screening for a parent

A screening is not a replacement for your primary care doctor. It is an extra set of information you can take back to them.

The four screenings, explained

1. 12-lead EKG (electrocardiogram)

Ten small stickers are placed on your chest, arms and legs, and a 12-lead EKG records your heart's electrical activity from 12 angles in just a few minutes. It shows your heart rhythm and can pick up irregular rhythms such as atrial fibrillation (AFib). It's painless and over quickly. Read more about what an EKG shows.

2. Carotid artery ultrasound

The carotid arteries run up both sides of your neck and carry blood to your brain. Using a warm gel and an ultrasound probe, we take images of these arteries and measure blood flow. Plaque buildup in the carotid arteries is linked to stroke risk. Learn more about carotid ultrasound.

3. Abdominal aorta ultrasound

The aorta is the largest artery in your body. This quick ultrasound of the abdomen checks its size, looking for an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), a bulge in the artery wall that often causes no symptoms. Learn more about AAA screening.

4. ABI (ankle-brachial index)

Blood pressure cuffs are placed on your arms and ankles, and the readings are compared. The result shows how well blood is flowing to your legs and can point to peripheral artery disease (PAD). Read our ABI test guide.

How to prepare

  • Wear a two-piece outfit so the chest, neck and abdomen are easy to reach.
  • For the aorta ultrasound, it helps to avoid a heavy meal for a few hours beforehand.
  • Bring a list of any medications you take.
  • Plan for about 60 minutes from check-in to checkout.

What happens after your visit

Your images and readings are reviewed by a board-certified cardiologist, and you receive a written report. If anything needs follow-up, the report is something you can share with your own doctor.
