Does Insurance Cover Heart Screenings? Cash Prices, HSA/FSA and What to Know
Share
One of the most common questions we hear is: "Will my insurance cover this?" The honest answer is that it depends, and for screenings done without symptoms, the answer is often no. Here's why, and what your options are.
Why insurance often doesn't cover screenings without symptoms
Health insurance generally pays for tests when there is a documented medical reason, such as symptoms, a diagnosis, or a doctor's order based on specific risk factors. Many cardiovascular screenings done purely for peace of mind fall outside that, so insurers often decline them or count them toward a high deductible.
There are exceptions. For example, Medicare covers a one-time abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) ultrasound for eligible people with a referral. But coverage rules vary a lot by plan.
How self-pay screening works
At ProActive Health Screening, all screenings are self-pay with a clear price listed on our website, so there are no surprise bills or claims to chase. You can book online without a referral.
- A small deposit reserves your appointment.
- The remaining balance is paid after your visit.
- Your visit includes four screenings: an EKG, a carotid artery ultrasound, an abdominal aorta ultrasound and an ABI circulation test, all reviewed by a board-certified cardiologist.
For many people with high-deductible plans, a self-pay screening ends up costing less than going through insurance.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Yes, we accept HSA and FSA cards. Medical screenings are generally an eligible expense for health savings and flexible spending accounts. Plans differ, so if you're unsure, check with your plan administrator. Keep your receipt for your records.
Tip: many FSA balances must be used by the end of the plan year. A screening is a meaningful way to use those funds before they expire.
Is a self-pay screening worth it?
That's a personal decision. People often choose it when they have a family history of heart disease, stroke or aneurysm, want more information than a routine physical provides, or want quick answers without waiting for referrals. Your report is yours to keep and share with your own doctor.
